Hawkman Unleashed: Board Review of Hawkman Vol. V No. 3

Hawkman No. 3 by Robert Venditti hit the spin racks on August 8th, and for some reason, this issue felt different from the first two issues. I couldn’t put my finger on it for a while. I read it again and again, looking for the reason. And I think I figured it out. This may be a purely personal take on this version of Hawkman that Venditti has come up with. Caution: this review will be bursting with spoilers so if you haven’t read the issue yet, please go read it and then check out my review when you come across it again.

Hawkman in the Superman/Aquaman Adventure Hour

The month of September 1967 was a month to remember for Hawkman fans. During that month, Hawkman was featured in an animated cartoon for the first time. It happened during the Superman/Aquaman Adventure Hour, a Filmation animated series that ran for 36 episodes in 1967-68. During the hour, there were regular Superman and Aquaman features, along with a feature of rotating DC hero cartoons. Each were about six-minutes long and featured The Justice League, Green Lantern, Flash, The Atom, and of course Hawkman. Except for Superman, this was the first time ever for the heroes to appear in an animated series. During the series, Hawkman had three of his own features and he was also a part of the three Justice League of America cartoons. Let's take a look at the six episodes that started Hawkman's animated career back in the 1960s.

On a site called Art Station, Julio Ceasar Benavides Macias posted pictures of a statue of Hawkgirl he made for a commission. It is absolutely beautiful and he is sure to get more requests for the statue. I've seen a few versions of a Hawkman Statue but this is the first Hawkgirl sculpture and it's high time! The History of Kalmoran

“Kalmoran!” In Hawkman Vol. V No. 2, Carter Hall found himself back in time, fighting Prince Khufu, one of his former selves. Towards the end of the fight, for a reason he didn’t know, Carter uttered the word “Kalmoran” and Khufu immediately stopped fighting. With one word, Khufu realized Carter was not his enemy and even helped him out by telling him where a map was hidden. So, what is this word “Kalmoran?” Long-time Hawkfans will know the meaning of the word but let’s look back and remember what, or rather, who Kalmoran was.

Board Review of Hawkman Vol. V No. 2

As I sat down to read Hawkman No. 2, I found myself feeling the same way I do when I sit down to watch a movie that I know, from all the word of mouth and previews, is going to be good. We are only two issues into Robert Venditti’s Hawkman series, but this is what many Hawkman fans have been wanting for a very long time. Geoff John’s run in Hawkman Vol. 4 (2002-2004) is often called the best version of Hawkman since the Gardner Fox-Joe Kubert days, but in my opinion this series is already on its way to surpassing it. The writing by Venditti and the art of Bryan Hitch has brought Carter Hall/Hawkman to where Hawkfans have always wanted him. The Indiana Jones comparisons have been made often over the years but it’s about time someone finally fully embraced that connection instead of trying to avoid it. Here are my thoughts on the issue and it is a completely spoiler rich review, so feel free to come back after you’ve read the issue.
