DC Comics Announces New Hawkman Series!

Finally! Washington Post announced on March 14, Wednesday that DC Comics will be starting a new Hawkman series on June 13th. The writer will be Robert Venditti (Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corp) and the art will be done by Bryan Hitch (Hawkman Found), Andrew Currie (Justice League) and Alex Sinclair (Hawkman Found!

Hawkman will be flying into his own new comic book from DC Comics later this summer. The new series, partly inspired by Hawkman’s role in the current miniseries “Dark Knights: Metal” and DC’s desire to once again make the character a major player in the DCU, will debut in June and will be written by Rob Venditti and illustrated by Bryan Hitch.“Hawkman is a foundational character in the DCU. Over time I think he’s lost some of that central importance to the DC universe, and we really want to bring that back and make him a marquee character,” Venditti said. “And to do that, we’re going to take him to a lot of unexpected, unexplored places and introduce a lot of new mythology for the character.”

The Extended Hawkman Family

Since 1940, the Hawkman family has reached far across time and space. Many characters in DC Comics have a connection to Hawkman and Hawkgirl. Starting with Carter and Shiera Hall's son Hector who eventually became Doctor Fate, the Hawks have relations with Superman, Wonder Woman, the Golden Eagle, Dream of the Endless and many others. It would be amazing for Hawkman and Superman to sit down one day and talk about the connection they have through Jonathan Kent. And with as many lives as the Hawks have lived, there is potential for many more heroes to find out that they are close or distant relatives of Hawkman and Hawkgirl. Hawkman Appearance on The Simpsons

The Simpsons once did a spoof on Hawkman back in Season 24, Episode 16 (aired on March 17, 2013). In an episode titled "Dark Knight Court", Montgomery Burns is a vigilante called Fruit Bat Man but he is captured. Nick Fury appears and calls for the "Octogenarian Initiative". Early Bird (Jasper Beardly, voiced by Harry Shearer), The Rambler (Abraham Simpson), Hot Flash (Alice Glick), and Iron Lung (Hans Moleman) join together to form "The Dependables". Hawkman is seen flying through the sky and walks into Skobo's, a restaurant that occasionally appears on the show. They are seen playing cards at the end of the episode. Go to 2:12 of the video to see Hawkman. Nice to see Hawkman chosen for the spoof.

Board Review of Metal No. 5: Maces, Magic Lassos, Martians and Madness

By Tim Board

Since the Metal saga began last summer, Scott Snyder’s “rock and roll” restructuring of the DC Universe has been building up to a crescendo. With only two more issues left in the series, I felt that issue No. 5 would be the one where it would reach its highest hope-devouring note and it feels like that is exactly what we got. So many things happened, and we had to run through it so fast, it left me wishing that this was a 12-issue bi-weekly. But if I got my wish, I imagine Greg Capullo and Jonathan Glapion might want to strangle me.
We open up the issue to find Barbatos perched on his pole, with dragons flying around. Not just dragons, but Joker dragons! I didn’t think much of it at first, because with seven evil Batman-things and Batmanium in the story, one gets used to such things.
