Review of Green Lantern Corps No. 3 (Hawkwoman!)

Green Lantern Corps No. 3 came out on April 9 and Holy Horus. I wasn't expecting something like this to happen out of nowhere in a non-Hawkman book, but seeing how things how gone in DC Comics lately, I wasn't all that surprised. Short-term gain, long term chaos seems to be the road map for DC now. This review of GLC No. 3 will be full of spoilers, so go read the first three issues of the series before you scroll down. By the seven hells, you've been warned.

Hawkgirl in Superman Legacy News and Updates

It's official! It's been announced that Hawkgirl will be in DCU's Superman Legacy. The movie is scheduled to be released on July 11, 2025. This post will follow all the news and updates about Hawkgirl's role in the film. The newest posts will be on top. Come back often to check up on the movie's updates for Hawkgirl!
Here are Isabela Merced's Instagram, IMDb, and Wikipedia pages!

"I was a DC kid growing up. We had the action figures, and most of them were so old and used that the paint had come off... But I really adored Hawkgirl," she said to Collider.

"I had Hawkgirl and Hawkman as part of my collection. Well, technically it wasn’t mine. It was my siblings and I’s collection. We had Hot Wheels too. We just had a really fun, enjoyable childhood with those. So, this is a full circle moment."

February 19, 2025: James Gunn Confirms Hawkgirl’s Wings Will Be Organic in the DCU!
The article from MAXBLZZ reports that James Gunn answered with one word when a fan asked him if Hawkgirl's wings were organic.
On Threads, a fan asked James Gunn if Hawkgirl’s wings in the Superman trailer were organic or mechanical, as they were struggling with their eyesight and couldn’t tell. They also thanked Gunn for creating a great cinematic universe.
Gunn simply replied, “Organic.”
There is a lot of debate going on about which Hawkgirl Isabela Merced will portray. I personally think that it will be Kendra for the following reasons:
1. Kendra Saunders is Hispanic. Isabela Merced's mother is from Peru and she considers herself more Peruvian than American.
2. The current Kendra Saunders in the comics has organic wings. Depending on the artist, they look more metallic but I've seen both.
3. Hawkman is nowhere around. It appears that Hawkgirl is "employed" by Max Lord as some sort of task force. Knowing Hawkman's character, I would have a hard believing that Carter Hall would join this sort of group. I hope we'll find out where Hawkman is in future movies, but I'm guessing Kendra and Carter work together at times but they usually go their own way. That would fit better with the "proper" Kendra-Carter relationship.

What do you guys think? Definitely interested in what your guess would be. Post it in the comment section below!

December 19, 2024: The first Superman Legacy trailer has been released. And we get our first look at Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl!

The wings, the helmet and the mace look awesome. Let's ignore that outfit for now. Hawkgirl is flying in the DCU! I'll add more reviews of the trailer later!

Here's the full trailer.

Superman: First Look Hawkgirl, Mister Terrific, and Guy Gardner
“These characters all get their moment in the sun,” Gunn said. “They all have their moments. They’re not just cameos; these are the characters. They’re supporting cast, but Mister Terrific is the main character of those characters. He actually has a big part of the plot. And so that was fun. And of course, getting to work with Nathan is always something, and putting him in a stupid look, and then Isabela is great. I’ve been a fan of hers for a long time. But was about balance.”
This first look at Hawkgirl also confirms what Merced has previously teased about her look in the film. Merced revealed this summer that she had a “badass” suit and helmet for Hawkgirl, noting that the suit was specific for the story.
“Well, there have been some leaked pictures online,” Merced said. “However, I think James knows what he wants, and this specific suit is for this specific timeline in the story. I don’t know what else I can say, but I gotta say, the helmet was my absolute favorite. It’s so sick. It’s so badass. It’s perfect.”
December 20, 2024: Every hero to appear in James Gunn's Superman - teaser trailer, explored

Hawkgirl: a warrior with wings and a weighty history
Hawkgirl' has a rich and often convoluted background. Her story spans ancient Egypt, alien worlds, and many reincarnations. In animated series like Justice League and Justice League Unlimited, Shayera Hol became a fan favorite with her tough attitude and intricate character development.
In live-action, Hawkgirl has often been a supporting character, such as in Legends of Tomorrow, where her storyline couldn't live up to her comic book legacy.
Gunn's version, played by Isabela Merced, looks set to give Hawkgirl the attention she deserves. The teaser highlights Hawkgirl’s iconic wings while showing her in action. It suggests that she will be portrayed as both graceful and deadly.
Fans speculate her appearance could be tied to Thanagar, her alien homeworld, or even Hawkman, last seen in Black Adam.
Gunn could explore her relationships with other heroes in Superman. She might clash with Superman ideologically or bond over their shared sense of duty. Her character thrives on balancing independence and loyalty. Gunn's choice to feature Hawkgirl shows his commitment to portraying female heroes as complex and powerful as their male counterparts—or even more.

December 20, 2024First 'Superman' trailer shows off David Corenswet's new Man of Steel. Here's who's in the cast.

Isabela Merced is playing Hawkgirl, a hero with a complicated backstory involving reincarnation. She also appeared in the Sony Marvel movie "Madame Web" as another superhero, Anya Corazon, and had a very gross role in "Alien: Romulus."

December 20, 2024Here Is Every DC Character You Might've Missed in the New 'Superman' Trailer
Hawkgirl, played by Isabela Merced, is likely the DC character in the trailer. Audiences will likely know her best thanks to her role in the popular Justice League and Justice League Unlimited. Hawkgirl has one of the most complicated origins in DC history, with various retcons establishing her as a former Egyptian princess who was part of a police force from an alien race of hawk people. A common element among her origins is the ability to reincarnate.
Hawkgirl's role in Superman seemingly could be setting her up for a bigger role in the DCU.

There's not much of a look at Hawkgirl in the trailer, but she can be seen flying through the sky at one point. We know she'll be played by Alien: Romulus actor Isabela Merced in the new movie.

Rounding out the potential Justice Leaguers in the film is Isabel Merced as Shayera Hol. Sorry for the blurry pic, but you know how fast those Thanagarians are. (Also, if Hawkgirl is here, does that mean Hawkman will arrive at some point soon...?)

DC Comics Solicitations June 2025

Art by Scott Knoblish

DC Comics June 2025 solicitations are out! Hawkman and Hawkgirl continue their run in the JSA series, but there is no mention or sighting of Hawkwoman in the Green Lantern Corps this month. There is a new series by Mark Waid called The New History of the DC Universe. It appears to be the history or DC through the eyes of Barry Allan, at least the first issue is. Not expecting much from this, but we'll see what happens. Here are the details for the three comics, including Green Lantern Corps.

DC Has Their Own Wolverine (And It’s Not Who You Think) - ComicBook.com

Art by Bryan Hitch

Since he hit the mainstream 25 years ago, Wolverine has often been compared to Hawkman. There are similarities and this article by David Harth does a pretty good job of describing the two heroes and how they match up. Personally, I think Hawkman could be a combination of several Marvel characters, Wolverine (healing, fighting), Thor (hammer- mace), Archangel (wings), and maybe even Moira MacTaggert (reincarnation). Take a look at the article and see what you think of the comparisons! LINK
There really doesn’t seem to be any character who fits the Wolverine mold, but actually DC has had their own Wolverine for much longer than Wolverine has existed — the leader of the Golden Age Justice Society of America known as Hawkman.
Hawkman first appeared in Flash Comics #1 from 1940, his hawk mask, giant wings, and morningstar mace setting him apart from the other early heroes of DC. Looking at Hawkman’s history, there are many, many parallels between him and Wolverine. Hawkman is one of the most complex characters in comics, much like Wolverine, and just needs to find the right portrayal to reach the heights of Marvel’s ol’Canucklehead.

Who's wealthier: Hawkman or Batman?

Who's wealthier: Hawkman or Batman? This is not a debate I've seen very often but it makes a whole lot of sense. Yes, Batman's superpower is that he is rich (so he says), but when you think about it, Hawkman could very well be much, much wealthier than the almighty Batman.

DC Comics Solicitations May 2025

JSA #7

DC Comics' solicitations are out! None of the Hawks are mentioned in the solicitations in anyway this month, but there are two series where they MIGHT show up. There is also a tiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnyyyyy Hawkman on a Superman variant cover so I'll list that as well. Sadly. still no news or rumors of a Hawkman series yet. Keep soaring!

P.S. I've started a Hawkworld community on Reddit, so come on over!

Hawkman Story in DC's Lex and the City

From DC's Lex and the City (March 2025)

We got a bit of a surprise last week when Hawkman unexpectedly appeared in a story in the issue titled DC's Lex and the City.  The book is a collection of eight anthology stories and Hawkman's story is the last story in the book. Below is a spoiler-rich review of the story, so if you haven't read it yet, go check it out!

Jeremy Adams Hints at a Relationship between Hawkwoman and John Stewart.

JSA No. 6

Green Lantern Corps No. 3

In the current Green Lantern Corps series, Hawkwoman will be making an appearance in March. She will be fighting alongside John Stewart and some of the other Green Lanterns to save Thanagar. First, here are some comments that Jeremy Adams made about Hawkwoman in a recent interview (from Newsorama):

DC Comics Solicitations April 2025

The DC Comics solicitations for April 2025 are out! The big surprise is that there are, not one, but two comics with Hawkwoman on the cover! After being missing in action for so long, it's nice to see her making something of a comeback. In JSA No. 6, there's the ominous note that one JSA member will not make it out of the Tower of Fate alive. (Better not be Hawkman...)

Predictions for Hawkworld 2025

Predictions and Hopes for Hawkworld 2025

It's been a slow few years for Hawkman and Hawkwoman. Ever since the end of the Hawkman series in 2021 and Justice League in 2022, it's been a long run of cameos, cover art appearances, and a few sudden appearances here and there with a line or two at best. Hawkgirl has had it a bit better, with her continued appearances with the Justice League, and the announcement of her role in the upcoming Superman movie. We'll ignore that disastrous Hawkgirl mini-series and just move on like it never happened.
So what will we see for the Hawks in 2025? Here are a few bold predictions for 2025.

Review of Hawkworld 2024

The Year 2024 was another year of waiting, searching, and being disappointed that ended with a bit more to look forward to in 2025. In comics, Hawkman and Hawkgirl appear to be back as regular members of the JSA series, unlike the disastrous, horribly delayed Justice Society series by Geoff Johns that ended mercifully in October. In the movies, Hawkgirl was in and out of the news thanks to the upcoming Superman Legacy film. Here are the highlights of Hawkworld 2024.

Preview of JSA No. 3

JSA No. 3 is coming out on January 1, but AIPT comics site posted a preview of the issue. If you read the last issue, Hawkman had a demonic sword thrust thru his chest. Is he dead? Hard to imagine how he'll get out of this one. And remember, the reincarnation cycle has been completed so if he dies, that's the end. No more reincarnation. Petition for The Shadow War of Hawkman and Hawkman Vol. 2

Way back in 1968, Hawkman's first solo run ended and he was teamed up with the Atom in the retitled Atom series, but The Atom and Hawkman lasted only 7 issues before being canceled. It began a long period where you would have to go to the Justice League of America series, backup features in Detective Comics, or stories in the World's Finest Comics to find the Hawks. Despite being almost a first-tier or strong second-tier hero in DC Comics during this time, Hawkman was without his own series for a very long time.

JSA #1 Review

JSA No. 1 (January 2025)

The new JSA series has kicked off! This review will be solely from a Hawkman/Hawkgirl point of view so if you're looking for a more complete review, please check out the other sites.

Jeff Lemire's series has finally kicked off and to be honest, it's a bit of a disappointment, from a Hawkfan's perspective of course. It appears that the Infinity INC and the Justice Society are together now and the younger heroes are trying to figure out why the veteran heroes suddenly vanished and where they went. While they squabble over how things should be done, it's revealed that the older members are in the Tower of Fate. Alan Scott, Jay Garrick, Wildcat, and Dr. Fate are trying to find a way out while Hawkman and Hawkgirl are outside fighting off the "locals." At the end of the issue, we find out that the Injustice Society may be behind it.
