Review of Hawkworld 2024

The Year 2024 was another year of waiting, searching, and being disappointed that ended with a bit more to look forward to in 2025. In comics, Hawkman and Hawkgirl appear to be back as regular members of the JSA series, unlike the disastrous, horribly delayed Justice Society series by Geoff Johns that ended mercifully in October. In the movies, Hawkgirl was in and out of the news thanks to the upcoming Superman Legacy film. Here are the highlights of Hawkworld 2024.
Comics

From Justice Society of America No. 10

Justice Society of America by Geoff Johns was a disappointing series that was often delayed. There was a 4-month delay between issues 9 and 10 and I almost forgot it was still going on. From a Hawk perspective, it was a big letdown. It was basically a Huntress (gotta get Batman involved somehow) series co-starring the Justice Society, but Hawkman only made occasional appearances with very few lines or things to do. He did appear on a few covers, but that was the highlight for this series. Covers are below.

The Hawkgirl series that ran in 2023 got a trade in June. This series was a badly written comic with pretty good art and it appears to have been forgotten in the scheme of things, thankfully. I bought the trade because I'm an incurable completist, but I haven't cracked it open even once. In my opinion, only Galaxy, The Prettiest Star fans need to pick this one up.

JSA by Jeff Lemire kicked off in November, with Hawkman (Carter Hall III) and Hawkgirl (Kendra Saunders II). The jury is still out on whether they are regular members or supporting cast of the younger heroes. The younger generation seems to be a common theme in the JSA now. The biggest reaction by Hawkfans who I know was mostly confusion about why it's Kendra and not Shayera. Personally, I was hoping that we never see Carter and Kendra anywhere near the other after 2+ decades of the flippity floppity soap drama betwen these two. I think most fans were hoping it was resolved with Kendra goin off on her own and Leaving Carter and Shayera alone, but here we are again. Apparently, Lemire has said that Hawkwoman will show up eventually (don't quote me on that), so we'll see what Lemire has planned.
(Spoiler Alert) Hawkman was run-through with a demonic flame sword in issue No. 2, apparently killing him. But the previews for issue No. 3 were released and apparently he is hanging on between life and death for some reason. We'll find out in issue No. 3 that comes out on January 1st.

From World's Finest No. 31

Hawkman also appeared in various comics as background fillers, on covers, and in short scenes fighting whatever. Hawkman hasn't had his own comic in over four years, but he hasn't completely disappeared either. Since the 1990s, he has had a series every fiver years or so, so maybe next year we will get some good news.

Figures, Toys, and Sculptures

Iron Studios announced a new Hawkman statue that will be released next year. It's a pretty nice size for about 250 US dollars. My kids don't HAVE to go to college, do they?  LINK

Movies

Things were rather quiet this year about Hawkgirl in Superman Legacy, but we did get two bits of interesting updates.

In July, there were some on set pictures released online and the reactions were not good. Hawkgirl seemed to be wearing some kind of white and green Max Lord team outfit, looking nothing like she ever has in the comics. Most fans were not pleased with this look. Some of the optimist fans said she should be wearing her own outfit by the end of the movie. We'll see.

Then in December the first official trailer was released. To be honest, I wasn't expecting to see her in the first one, but there she was for one glorious second, dive-bombing with her mace. The wings, the helmet, and the mace look just about perfect. It's just that uniform.. Again, fingers crossed. July 11 is the day, although a delay wouldn't surprise me.
You can keep up with the Hawkgirl news from the movie HERE

This year was a rather disappointing year for the Hawks in comics, but they never really went away either. That's encouraging. We'll have the movie to look forward to next year, as well as Lemire's JSA series. The ninth anniversary since I started Hawkworld will be on January 15, and I hope to be able to continue bringing Hawkman, Hawkgirl, and Hawkwoman news to Hawkfans so come by and check the site when you can! Tell your friends as well! This has become the largest group of Hawkfans in the world and we hope to keep the Hawks soaring in 2025!
