Gunn Shuts Down Hawkman Spin-Off Plans

A rather depressing article from a site called The Direct came out today. In an article titled "Black Adam 2: Did DC Cancel Dwayne Johnson's Sequel Plan?" (the answer is yes) by Nathan Johnson, we see the details of what Johnson had planned and also the tidbit again about some plans for a Hawkman spinoff.

"One such spin-off was set to feature Aldis Hodge's Hawkman in a lead role and be centered around that character, and it was even reported in December 2022 that more details would emerge once James Gunn and Peter Safran fully took over as Co-CEOs of DC Studios."

But Gunn killed those plans and started a DCU with his own version of Superman and his personal leftover characters from his movies in the DCEU. In his "Chapter One" plans, there is no sign of the Hawks anywhere.

DCU's "Chapter One"

This implies that there would be a Chapter Two, but I wonder how many fans out there think they will actually get through this first phase. It would take about 8 to 10 years for all of these movies to see the light of day, which makes the "Chapter One" title rather amusing since DC never lets anything last that long anymore. There will be another reboot/reset Crisis of some sort long before this plan is fully realized.

No more Aldis Hodge as Hawkman?

So it looks like, for now, that Aldis Hodge's chances for a spinoff movie or TV show are no longer happening. Gunn might decide to throw Hawkman in a Suicide Squad Part 3 or something, so we never know when he will pop up. But it's pretty obvious that Hawkman and Hawkgirl are way down on Gunn's list of priorities.

I'm thankful that we got at least the Hawkman that we did, but I had really hoped that it would lead to Hawkgirl's first appearance on the silver screen. The future for the Hawks now seems more far away than ever but we live in a universe where Batman gets three out of the 16 movies planned, so it is what it is. I think I'll stick to comics and hope that an animation appearance pops up somewhere. We'll just have to cross our wings and hope for the best. That's what Hawkfans do.
